Nearly all athletes have their eyes set on a professional in their sport whom they want to emulate. For those of us who grew up playing tennis in the 2000s and 2010s, Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, and Novak Djokovic were undoubtedly an inspiration to some degree. However, as time progresses and new athletes join the tour, there is an undeniable search for the next big thing. So, who will it be? All signs point to Carlos Alcaraz.

Since the start of his professional tennis career, beginning in 2018, Alcaraz has been the source of many thrilling points as well as moments of humor. The athlete’s natural charisma has stolen the hearts of millions of tennis fans from across the globe, and his raw talent for tennis has quickly propelled him to the top of the leaderboard.

The 23-year-old pro has been working at mastering the game since he was merely four years old, and his work has paid off. In September of 2022, Alcaraz defeated Djokovic in the U.S. Open. This win not only titled Alcaraz as the number one player in the world, but also made him the youngest ever to top the leaderboard. And the U.S. Open was just the beginning as Alcaraz has managed to secure seven Grand Slam titles in a five year time frame.

Alcaraz’s number of titles directly reflects his effort while playing. The young athlete makes sure to run for seemingly impossible shots and manages to win points in ways that seem unhuman. Despite his great success and intensity during difficult points, Alcaraz makes sure to keep things light-hearted. During the 2023 U.S. Open, Alcaraz unintentionally framed a ball into the stands. Many players would have been consumed with frustration but Alcaraz spent more than twenty seconds of screen-time laughing after a fan, who failed to catch the stray ball, chugged a beer on the big screen. Then, during the 2024 Indian Wells tournament, Alcaraz’s quarter-finals match was interrupted by a swarm of bees, causing both Alcaraz and his competitor to take shelter. After the match, Alcaraz posted pictures of himself on Instagram with his shirt pulled across his face as a shield from the swarming insects, which he captioned, “Bee invasion!” Then, two years later, he wore a bee costume on-court to highlight the memory. But Alcaraz’s cheerfulness persists not only through comedic moments such as these, but also through periods of tribulations.

Over the course of the past several years, tennis fans have seen Alcaraz face a series of cramp-attacks and injuries. Twice in 2023, Alcaraz sought on-court medical attention for severe cramps. Then, during the 2024 Rio Open, he suffered a lateral ankle injury which forced him out of the tournament. Also in 2024, Alcaraz sustained an injury to his pronator teres muscle in his dominant arm, which prevented him from participating in the Monte-Carlo Masters.

Most recently, Alcaraz pulled out of the 2026 Barcelona Open mid-tournament due to a wrist injury, and has since missed five other tournaments. Despite these physical setbacks, Alcaraz has remained optimistic. In his most recent update regarding his injury, Alcaraz posted on Instagram, “My recovery is going well and I’m feeling much better, but unfortunately I’m still not ready to compete...We’ll keep working to come back as soon as possible!”

Time and time again, tennis fans have seen Alcaraz persevere through physical, mental, and emotional challenges. The athlete’s ability to keep a smile on his face regardless of injuries, mis-hits, and insect attacks is an admirable trait that will influence many young athletes around the world. It is Alcaraz’s optimism and humility, paired with his undeniable talent, that keep him as a fan-favorite and an increasingly popular athlete in the ATP. With athletes such as Carlos Alcaraz to take the place of retiring tennis icons, the tennis community can rest assured that the game is in good hands.
